Baseball's World Classic!
Major League baseball recently announced the creation of the "World Baseball Classic". The tournament has been discussed for years and is now finally going to happen next spring. There are still details in the works regarding specific locations that are to be released sometime this summer, but the fact that all the national/international players and various baseball associations involved agreed on the concept to such a tournament is amazing. The game just took a huge step forward in becoming a true world sport.
There is always a story behind the story. Many MLB, MLBPA staff have put a lot of time into making this happen. Unfortunately, two of the key players in making this happen have moved on to greener fields. Sandy Alderson former MLB Executive VP and Tony Bernazard former MLB players representative stayed true to the course of developing the game world wide by campaigning for this event over the past several years. They were great to work with!
MLBI even has its own weblink on the MLB.COM web page. The site outlines "Major League Baseball International" and its programs around the world.
"The Classic"
Can you even imagine a Randy Johnson in a "USA" jersey dueling against Pedro Martinez in his countries uniform from the Dominican Republic! Potential international sites in Tokyo and San Juan have been discussed. All other locations will be in the states. A 16 team tournament with Round robin play has also been determined.
More to come on this event.
